Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn a way to express your opinion on something that you have largely settled on as true. This grammatical principle is commonly used to describe what one figured must be the case, even though the fact has not yet been confirmed. In this lesson, you will learn about ~거니. Let’s get started.

~거니: Confident Assumption

You can attach ~거니 to verb and adjective stems to express a guess that the speaker has settled on as likely to be true. ~거니 is often used when explaining what the speaker assumed or expected to be true. ~거니 is commonly attached to ~겠 to indicate that the situation is somewhat of a guess. For example:

여자 친구가 그렇게 화가 났어도 내일이면 연락이 오겠거니 생각했어요
= Even though my girlfriend was that angry, I figured she’d contact me by tomorrow

In the example above, the speaker did not know this would happen for sure. However, they were confident enough in their conjecture to settle on it mentally. In a sense, it’s almost as if the speaker decided to take this assumption for granted.

As in the example above, ~거니 usually translates to something like:

I figured that…

Other common ways to translate these types of sentence are:

I was confident that…
I assumed that…

In Lesson 202, you learned about ~(으)려니 and how it is also used to indicate a guess from the speaker. While ~(으)려니 presents something as an assumption the speaker has made, ~거니 suggests that the speaker has settled on that assumption as likely to be true.

For example, check out the following two sentences and their differences in English translation:

그가 잘 하려니 생각했어요
= I assumed he’d do well (but maybe that was naïve)

그가 잘 하겠거니 생각했어요
= I was confident he’d do well

It is also possible to attach ~거니 to ~았/었~. This allows the speaker to indicate that they had settled on the assumption that something had already happened. For example:

회의는 비공식적이었으니 조용히 끝났거니 여겼어요
= I assumed it had ended quietly since it was unofficial

회의가 비공식적이었으니 곧 끝나겠거니 생각했어요
= Since the meeting was unofficial, I figured it would end quickly

Below are many examples using the vocabulary introduced in this lesson.
