Lesson 168: ~거나 말거나: Indifference

Common Usages:
내장 기관 = internal organs

Examples:
의사는 환자의 내장을 검사하고 있었어요
= The doctor was examining the patient’s intestines

내장을 먹거나 말거나 그것은 중요하지 않아요
= Whether I eat intestines or not, that’s not what’s important

Common Usages:
흐름이 끊기다 = for flow to be disrupted
현금의 흐름 = cash flow

Examples:
계속되는 흐름 속에서 기회를 잡아야 해요
= You need to catch the opportunity in the continuous flow

흐름을 따르거나 말거나 저는 별로 개의치 않아요
= Whether I follow the flow or not, I don’t really mind

흐름을 따라가거나 말거나 결국엔 목표에 도달할 거예요
= Whether I follow the flow or not, I will eventually reach my goal

Common Usages:
물개 박수 = seal clap (clapping with excitement like a seal)

Examples:
물개가 물에서 재밌게 놀고 있었어요
= The seal was playing joyfully in the water

물개를 보거나 말거나 바닷가에서 시간을 보내는 게 좋아요
= Whether I see a seal or not, I enjoy spending time at the beach

상어는 사람을 무는 이유는 사람을 대부분 물개로 착각하기 때문이에요
= The reason why sharks bite humans is mostly because they mistake them/us for seals

Common Usages:
교직원 = teacher
교직원연수 = teacher training
교직에 서다 = to become a teacher

Examples:
그 선생님은 평생을 교직에 헌신해 왔어요
= That teacher dedicated his entire life to the teaching profession

= 제가 교직에 있거나 말거나 그건 제 관심사가 아니에요
Whether I’m in the teaching profession or not, that’s not my concern

Common Usages:
교직원 = teacher
교직원연수 = teacher training

Examples:
학교 교직원들이 모여 회의를 했어요
= The school faculty gathered for a meeting

학교에서 교직원에게 질문을 하거나 도서관에서 정보를 찾을 수 있어요
= You can either ask a faculty member a question or find information in the library

Common Usages:
반품 배송비 = return shipping fee
교환 배송비 = exchange shipping fee

Examples:
배송비가 생각보다 비싸서 깜짝 놀랐어요
= I was surprised because the shipping fee was more expensive than expected

배송비를 내거나 말거나 저는 꼭 이 물건을 살 거예요
= Whether I pay the shipping fee or not, I will definitely buy this item

Common Usages:
주사위를 던지다 = to roll the dice
주사위가 던져졌다 (idiom) = the die is cast

Examples:
아이들은 주사위를 굴려 게임을 시작했어요
= The children rolled the dice to start the game

주사위는 이미 던져졌으니 최선을 다할게요
= The dice have already been rolled, so I’ll do my best

주사위를 던지거나 카드 게임을 해도 돼요
= You can either roll the dice or play a card game

Common Usages:
공통 관심사 = common interest

Examples:
환경 문제는 모두의 관심사가 되어야 해요
= Environmental issues should be everyone’s concern

이 동호회는 비슷한 관심사를 가진 사람들을 위한 거예요
= This club is for people with similar interests

그가 더듬더듬 말하거나 말거나 그건 제 관심사가 아니에요
= Whether he stutters or not, that’s not my concern

제가 교직에 있거나 말거나 그건 제 관심사가 아니에요
= Whether I’m in the teaching profession or not, that’s not my concern

Examples:
밤하늘에 별이 가득 떠 있었어요
= The night sky was filled with stars

가로등이 밤하늘을 밝게 비춰요
= Streetlights illuminate the night sky

밤하늘에 초승달이 아름답게 떠 있었다
= The crescent moon was beautifully hanging in the night sky

은하수는 밤하늘에서 아름다운 모습을 보여줍니다
= The Milky Way displays a beautiful sight in the night sky

별이 반짝이거나 말거나 밤하늘은 아름다워요
= Whether the stars are shining or not, the night sky is beautiful

Examples:
아가야, 쉬하고 싶으면 말해줘
= If you need to pee, let me know

아이가 쉬가 마려워서 화장실로 뛰어갔어요
= The kid needed to pee so he ran to the bathroom

아이에게 쉬를 하라고 말하거나 말거나 아이는 화장실에 가기 싫어했어요
= Whether I told the child to pee or not, they didn’t want to go to the bathroom

Examples:
심사위원들은 영화를 신중히 심사했어요
= The judges carefully screened the film

지원자를 심사하거나 말거나 기준은 똑같아야 해요
= Whether they screen the applicants or not, the standards should be the same

Common Usages:
자가 격리 = self-quarantine
격리 기간 = quarantine period

Examples:
그 사람이 독감 때문에 격리되었어요
= That person was quarantined due to the flu

감기에 걸리면 격리를 하거나 병원에 가야 해요
= If you catch a cold, you have to either quarantine or go to the hospital

신종 바이러스가 검출되어 많은 사람들이 격리되었어요
= A new virus was detected, and many people were quarantined

Notes: While the official word is 개의하다, it is almost exclusively used as 개의치 않다.

Examples:
우리 엄마는 큰 일에도 개의치 않아해요
= Even big issues don’t bother our mom

흐름을 따르거나 말거나 저는 별로 개의치 않아요
= Whether I follow the flow or not, I don’t really mind

얼굴이 벌겋거나 말거나 저는 별로 개의치 않아요
= Whether my face turns red or not, I don’t really mind

Examples:
우리는 최신 영화를 상영하는 극장에 갔어요
= We went to a theater showing the latest movie

영화를 상영하거나 말거나 그게 중요한 게 아니에요
= Whether they show the movie or not, that’s not what’s important

Examples:
저는 창피해서 얼굴이 벌겋게 변했어요
= I turned red in the face from embarrassment

얼굴이 벌겋거나 말거나 그는 계속 화를 참으려고 했어요
= Whether his face was red or not, he kept trying to hold back his anger

Common Usages:
시야가 뿌옇다 = for vision to be blurry

Examples:
안개가 짙어 길이 뿌옇게 보였어요
= The fog was thick, and the road looked cloudy

물이 조금 뿌예 보여서 마시면 안 될 것 같아요
= That water looks a little murky, so we probably shouldn’t drink it

날씨가 뿌옇거나 말거나 아무래도 상관없어요
= Whether the weather is foggy or not, it really doesn’t matter

Examples:
그 사람의 말은 너무 어이없어서 말이 안 나왔어요
= The words of that person were so absurd that I was speechless

이유가 어이없거나 말거나 규칙은 지켜야 해요
= Whether the reason is absurd or not, the rules must be followed

Examples:
그 부탁은 나에게 너무 부담스러웠어요
= That request felt too burdensome for me

이 일이 부담스럽거나 말거나 그건 문제가 안 돼요
= Whether this task is burdensome or not, that’s not a problem

Examples:
엄마는 별 이유 없이 화를 냈어요
= Mom got angry for no particular reason

Examples:
별이 반짝 빛나는 밤이었어요
= It was a night with stars shining brightly

별이 반짝이거나 말거나 밤하늘은 아름다워요
= Whether the stars are shining or not, the night sky is beautiful

공기가 깨끗한 곳에 가면 수만 개의 아름다운 별이 반짝이는 것 볼 수 있어요
= If you go to a place where there is clean (unpolluted) air, you can see tens of thousands of beautiful stars sparkling

Examples:
어떻든 우린 결국 그 문제를 해결했어
= Either way, we solved the problem in the end

백신을 접종하거나 말거나 어떻든 저는 상관 안 해요
= Whether I get vaccinated or not, either way, I don’t care

Common Usages:
더듬더듬 말하다 = to speak hesitantly
더듬더듬 만지다 = to fumble with hands

Examples:
그 아이는 말을 더듬더듬 하며 대답했어요
= The child answered while stuttering

그가 더듬더듬 말하거나 말거나 중요한 것은 진심이에요
= Whether he stutters or not, what matters is his sincerity

사람들은 가끔씩 너무 긴장하면 더듬더듬 말게 돼요
= When people get nervous they end up stuttering
