Introduction
In this lesson, you will learn another pseudo-noun. This noun allows you to express that certain situations can be considered as something. In this lesson, you will learn about ~ㄴ/은 셈이다. Let’s get started.
~ㄴ/은 셈이다: To be considered as
In Lesson 51, you learned the word 세다, which is used when one “counts” something. For example:
그는 마음속에 있는 앙심을 세고 있었다
= He was counting the grudges in his heart
By placing ~ㅁ/음 onto 세다, you can create the noun form of 세다. 셈 is a versatile noun. In one of its uses, it is a pseudo-noun that is often described by a verb or adjective by attaching ~ㄴ/은. For example:
그렇게까지 하면 끝난 셈이에요
= If you go that far, it counts as being over
In the sentence above, the speaker is indicating that “going that far” counts as something. It is a way to summarize or approximate a situation by relating it to something else. Effectively, it is used to estimate the result of a situation. In the situation above, it’s not literally over. However, it counts as being over. The speaker is estimating that it is over when literally it is not.
Other ways to translate the sentence above would be:
그렇게까지 하면 끝난 셈이에요
= If you go that far, you could consider it over
= If you go that far, it’s basically over
= If you go that far, you could say that it’s over

눈치 못 챘으면 좀 둔한 셈이지
= If you didn’t notice that, you’re basically a bit slow
말이 짤막했지만 마음은 담긴 셈이야
= The words were brief, but it still counts as heartfelt
한 명이지만 의견이 여럿인 셈이에요
= It’s just one person, but it’s like they have many opinions
그렇게 착하고 예쁘면 요정인 셈이지
= If she’s that kind and pretty, she’s basically a fairy
연락을 계속 피하니까 나를 멀리한 셈이지
= If you keep avoiding contact, it’s basically distancing yourself from me
그 직책을 준 것은 권한을 부여한 셈이에요
= Giving that position basically means you’ve authorized them
아무 말도 안 한 것은 결국 동조한 셈이에요
= Saying nothing is basically agreeing
목소리가 작고 부드러워서 나지막한 셈이에요
= The voice is soft and low, so you could say it’s rather quiet
안전장비 없이 작업한 것은 부주의한 셈이에요
= Working without safety gear is basically being negligent
전에는 조용했는데 지금은 완전 딴판인 셈이야
= He used to be quiet, so now it’s basically a total change
이 문제는 단순한 일의 테두리를 넘은 셈이에요
= This issue has basically gone beyond the boundary of a simple task
그렇게 조심하는 것을 보면 늘 경계하는 셈이지
= If you’re that cautious, it’s basically being on guard all the time
언제든지 연락 가능하니 상시 대기 중인 셈이에요
= You can reach me anytime, so I’m basically on standby constantly
동네에서 제일 연세가 많으시니까 영감인 셈이에요
= Since he’s the oldest in the neighborhood, you could say he’s the elder
이렇게까지 신경 쓰는 것을 보면 애정을 표현한 셈이지
= The fact that you care this much basically means you’ve shown affection
영화가 끝났지만 여운이 길게 남아서 아직도 본 셈이에요
= The movie is over, but the lingering feeling is so strong it’s like I’m still watching it
