Lesson 200: 부리다: To Display a Behavior or Attitude

Common Usages:
똥꼬집 = stubbornness, pigheadedness
고집이 세다 = to be very stubborn
고집을 꺾다 = to break someone’s stubbornness, to make someone yield

Examples:
우리 아버지는 고집이 너무 세요
= Our dad is too stubborn

그렇게 고집을 부리지 말고 타협하는 법도 배워야죠
= You need to stop being so stubborn and learn how to compromise

Common Usages:
밥투정 = fussiness about eating
잠투정 = fussiness about sleeping
투정을 부리다 = to whine, to complain pettily

Examples:
그녀는 사소한 일에도 투정을 부리며 짜증을 냈어요
= She whined and complained even about trivial things

밥 안 먹겠다고 투정을 부리는 아이를 달래느라 땀이 났어요
= I was sweating trying to calm down the child who was whining about not eating

Common Usages:
심술보 = sulky mood, crankiness
심술을 부리다 = to act cranky, to be mean-spirited

Examples:
그는 심술이 나서 괜히 동생의 장난감을 숨겼어요
= Out of spite, he hid his younger brother’s toy for no reason

네가 기분이 안 좋다고 심술을 부리면 주위 사람들만 힘들어져요
= If you act spitefully just because you’re in a bad mood, you’re only making it hard for others

Common Usages:
생떼를 부리다 = to throw a tantrum

Examples:
그 아이는 생떼를 쓰며 부모에게 장난감을 사달라고 조르고 있었어요
= The child was stubbornly begging his parents to buy him a toy

엄마가 안 된다고 해도 애가 계속 생떼를 부려서 결국 사 줬어요
= Even though his mom said no, the kid threw such a tantrum that she ended up buying it

Common Usages:
허세를 부리다 = to show off, to bluff
허세가 심하다 = to be very showy, to bluff heavily

Examples:
괜히 허세를 부리다가 창피만 당했어요
= I tried to show off and ended up just embarrassing myself

그는 허세를 부리며 자신이 대단한 사람인 척했어요
= He put on a bluff, pretending to be more important than he really was

Common Usages:
허풍을 부리다 = to boast, to exaggerate
허풍을 치다 = to brag, to exaggerate

Examples:
그의 말은 허풍이 심해서 믿기 어려웠어요
= His words were so exaggerated that they were hard to believe

또 허풍을 부리고 있네요. 이번엔 자기가 연예인이랑 밥 먹었다고요?
= There he goes bragging again. This time saying he had dinner with a celebrity?

Common Usages:
공갈사기단 = extortion gang

Examples:
그는 공갈로 상대에게 돈을 뜯어내려 했어요
= He tried to extort money from the other person through threats

극성부모 = overbearing parent
극성을 부리다 = to be overly zealous, to be overbearing

Examples:
그의 감정 기복이 심해서 극성을 부릴 때는 누구도 말릴 수 없어요
= His mood swings are so extreme that no one can stop him when he gets worked up

부모들이 입시 준비 때문에 극성을 부리는 것을 보면 마음이 안 좋아요
= It’s disheartening to see how excessively some parents push their kids for college entrance exams

Common Usages:
말썽을 부리다 = to cause trouble
말썽을 피다 = to get into trouble
말썽꾸러기 = troublemaker

Examples:
걔는 어딜 가든 꼭 말썽을 부려서 문제예요
= No matter where he goes, he always causes trouble, that’s the problem

그 아이는 늘 말썽을 피워 부모를 걱정시켰어요
= The child was always causing trouble, making his parents worry

Common Usages:
성질을 내다 = to get angry, to show temper
한성질 하다 = to have quite a temper

Examples:
우리 애기가 한 성질 해요
= Our baby has a temper

아저씨는 예의는커녕 성질만 부리고 나가 버렸어요
= The older man didn’t even bother to be polite, he just lost his temper and stormed out

Common Usages:
추태를 부리다 = to behave disgracefully
추태를 피다 = to commit a disgraceful act

Examples:
그 정치인의 추태가 언론을 통해 크게 보도되었어요
= The politician’s indecent behavior was widely reported in the media

술 마시고 사람들 앞에서 추태를 부리는 것은 정말 부끄러운 일이에요
= Behaving indecently in front of people when drunk is truly disgraceful

Common Usages:
늑장을 부리다 = to dawdle, to stall
늑장을 피우다 = to procrastinate, to drag one’s feet

Examples:
시간 없다고 하면서 왜 그렇게 늑장을 부려요
= You said you’re short on time, so why are you dragging your feet?

그는 늘 늑장을 부려서 중요한 약속에 자주 늦었어요
= He always dragged his feet and often arrived late to important appointments

Common Usages:
억지를 부리다 = to be obstinate, to insist unreasonably

Examples:
이건 말도 안 되는 요구예요. 더 이상 억지를 부리지 마세요
= This is a ridiculous demand. Stop pushing it stubbornly.

그 아이는 안되는 일을 계속 하겠다고 억지를 부려서 모두를 힘들게 했어요
= The child insisted on doing something he wasn’t allowed to do, making things difficult for everyone

Common Usages:
기승을 부리다 = to rage, to be rampant

Examples:
장마가 끝나자마자 더위가 기승을 부리고 있어요
= As soon as the rainy season ended, the heat came back with a vengeance

한여름에 더위가 기승을 부려 밖에 나가기조차 힘들었어요
= The summer heat raged so fiercely that it was hard to even go outside

Common Usages:
개수작 = nonsense, silly trick
수작을 부리다 = to play tricks, to act up
수작을 걸다 = to start flirting, to start trouble, to provoke

Examples:
그렇게 수작 부릴 시간 있으면 일이나 제대로 해요
= If you have time to mess around like that, just focus on your work properly

그 남자는마음에 드는 여자에게 계속 수작을 부렸어요
= The man kept making moves (or hitting on) the woman he liked

Common Usages:
예의범절 = manners and etiquette
예의를 차리다 = to be polite, to observe manners
예의를 지키다 = to keep good manners

Examples:
아저씨는 예의는커녕 성질만 부리고 나가 버렸어요
= The older man didn’t even bother to be polite, he just lost his temper and stormed out

저는 큰 아버지를 보자마자 예의바르게 절했어요
= As soon as I saw my dad’s older brother, I bowed to him politely

그 사람은 모범 시민으로서 예의를 갖추고 있어요
= That person behaves with decorum as a model citizen

이 청년은 예의가 발라서 어른들에게 인기가 많아요
= This young man is very polite, so he is popular amongst older people

Examples:
그 아이는 동네에서 유명한 말썽꾸러기였어요
= That kid was known as the biggest troublemaker in the neighborhood

걔는 어딜 가든 꼭 말썽을 부려서 문제예요
= No matter where he goes, he always causes trouble, that’s the problem

Examples:
부모들이 입시 준비 때문에 극성을 부리는 것을 보면 마음이 안 좋아요
= It’s disheartening to see how excessively some parents push their kids for college entrance exams

= You need to stop being so stubborn and learn how to compromise

Examples:
아저씨는 말을 능숙하게 부렸어요
= He handled the horse skillfully

한국어에 능숙한 외국 사람이 별로 없어요
= There aren’t that many foreigners who are proficient at Korean
